A friend of a coworker (who isn't a designer) contacted me because her company needs some help.
It's just some easy production work and might only take an hour or so.
How much would you charge for this? Charging a day rate might seem high. An hourly rate might seem cheap.

Charge 2-3 hours because "1 hour jobs" always end up taking at least that much with revisions and communication bullshit after the fact.
- +100 and sometimes more than 4 hourshektor911

3 days of work later you realize: There is no such thing as a one hour job.

Do it for a beer with the boss.
Find common ground and kick back a few.
Convince them of design's merit for their product/business.
Start doing work for them on retainer.

I helped my only freelance client with some "easy" revisions to the website I designed a few years back. I charged her 3 hours of labor.
With all the things she forgot, and changes, it took 10 hours.
I learned my lesson.
- i hope you realised the lesson is to limit the scope of changes and charge for extras.Amicus

Only hookers charge by the hour.
- Are you calling my mechanic a hooker? I've been sending him flowers for nothing?!!?!?********
- Your mechanic only pretends to charge by the hour... and hookers don't charge for parts, only labour =)zarkonite
- mechanics usually charge "what the books say the hours will be" no matter how long it takes them,...vaxorcist
- I was sure hookers charge by what part you (or they) use...Amicus

@Frosty_spl brings up a point.... they may think it's one hour..... and remember conways's law:
Never attribute to bad intent anything that can be explained by ignorance, confusion or stupidity....
- monospaced0
@vaxorcist the client doesn't know how long it'll take, it's newuser who's considering quoting them for one hour.
If you think it'll take you one hour, quote them that. If you think more, then go higher. Just don't let the "friend of a coworker" shit let her get free work out of you after the fact.
- < This, especially the last sentenceContinuity
- often when I think things will "take one hour" they're either 10 minutes or 2+ hours.... for new clients...vaxorcist
- Translation: when I think it'll take 1 hour I think it'll take 2-3 hours. Then just say you think it'll take 2-3 hours FFS.monospaced

I opened this thread expecting tales of one hour blow jobs...
