i think it's font issue somewhere, like it's not displaying the correct glyphs

1) Have you Saved As to EPS, then relinked?
2) Try packaging the file – it may show the error on the Export screen (maybe a problem with an embedded font within the AI).

**********Just noticed that it's only doing that in Acrobat 8 Pro, not Apple preview.

The Garamond being used in the linked artwork is a different file from the one used in the layout file. InDesign can't do anything about linked art fonts in that situation. You need to go into your art files and change all the instances of Garamond (not hard to do with the Find Type thing).

Always avoid having multiples of the same font anywhere on your system. Use something like FontExplorerX that will search multiples and delete/merge them
