That Surface pricing was a nail in the coffin.

    • But there is plenty of fight left in MS.ETM

it really is. i want one but not for that coin. a little more and i'm looking at a macbook pro. so why would i bother? i'm guessing that's what others are thinkin' as well.

    • I want one too, but it's too much $ to be a secondary device. And even as a test item, market share needs to build.ETM
    • build first before I add another criteria/platform to the dev and test process.ETM

    1. The iPad eats the consumer PC market.
Tablets, not the iPad, so MS did an OS that runs on tablets with ARM and x86 Architecture.

    2. Employees gradually switch away from using Windows PCs for work.
In advertising agencies maybe, but I don't know anyone who can choose it. Offices still have PCs.

    3. Windows 8 fails to stop the iPad.
So Windows 8 is a tablet?

    4. Loyal developers start to leave the Microsoft platform.
    Source?

    5. Windows Phone gets no traction despite the Nokia deal and RIM's collapse.
Not as huge as iOS and Android now, but give it a try and lets see how the WP8s are doing, they are just out.

    6. Office loses relevance.
lol. (Everyone who tried alternatives is coming back.) Office has never been so good and relevant. Its almost more important than Windows to MSFT.

    7. Microsoft's other business applications start to erode.
    Like?

    8. The platform business collapses.
    Wut?

    9. The Xbox was never going to make up the slack, and Microsoft can no longer afford to keep investing in it.
In fact, Xbox is making profit. Kinect is highly accepted by developers and even industry applications are available.

    10. Microsoft suffers a huge quarterly loss. Ballmer retires to play golf.
The only thing that is true. Ballmer needs to be replaced.

    1. iPads and Androids. Surface and this new shit Microsoft is peddling is neither a tablet nor a laptop. It's an akward shaped something in between that doesn't do any single thing great.

    2. More and more offices are switching to Chromebooks and Mac Book Airs or iPads or Android tablets because they are far more efficient, they can use them on the go and enterprises are writing apps specifically for Android and iOS. Nobody gives a crap about Windows and this new Metro/WinRT crap.

    3. Windows 8 is horrific hybrid that sucks at pretty much everything and looks atrocious. And this is coming from a looooong time Windows user. It's worse than Windows Millenium crap.

    4. Um, you don't need a source, everyone and their mothers are developing for Android and iOS now. Nobody does any Windows work or serious software anymore because it's useless and they have much better monetization with Google and Apple. The philosophy of business and other apps that are tailored specifically to tablets is the future and Android and iOS own like 90% of the market.

    5. Windows Phone is a dud. Nokia is going to go bankrupt quickly and will be bought by Microsoft. Windows phones are one trick pony. They all look the same and Windows Phone OS is so behind the curve that there is absolutely no chance they will ever develop any marketshare beyond a few percent (and this is if they are super lucky)

    6. I don't know who you talk to but not a single person who used Office before I know (and I know a LOT of people, even whole depts in corporations) have switched or are switching to cloud based office (aka Google Docs and similar services). Office is ancient and simply doesn't offer flexibility for the modern age. It just sucks.

    7. Pretty much every dept. but Xbox and Xbox Live services.

    8. What he means is that Microsoft is losing enterprise markets and their whole business platform is collapsing. This is 100% true. Most Fortune 500 companies are switching fully to iPads, Apple laptops/Chromebooks, Android tablets and cloud based services. Azure is the last hailmary in enterprise market for Microsoft and they are just being destroyed by Google's and Amazon's enterprise cloud based solutions and servers.

    9. Again, Xbox is profitable, but unfortunately, Xbox and Xbox Live Marketplace simply cannot carry whole Microsoft.

    10. Yep

  • mekk0

    @animatedgif:
because MS plays a big role in gaming. Not just platforms and games, they also provide DirectX. Most multiplatform games are developed on Xbox and were ported to PC and PS3 when it's done.

#8 is beginning to be true....

By depending on the corp IT depts to do the work for them, MS could only have to convince a few in order to sell to many..... but this resulted in a few messes, such as Exchange server and some licensing hells that caused IT depts to often balloon with hiring friends of friends whose only job was to answer the phone and reboot servers. Management often deeply resented the IT department octopus they felt was strangling the company, so management was insanely happy to jump to anything cloud based as fast as possible and be rid of those annoying IT dept dudes.....

  • monospaced0

Last week it was "Apple is doomed" and now it's "Microsoft is fucked." Soon we won't even have computers.

  • formed0

#5 is funny...."They [windows phones] all look the same..."

Uh, have you seen an iPhone? Can't tell the difference between my 4S, my friends 4 or a new 5, for that matter...all the same (as far as I am concerned, really not much different than v.1, imho)

Personally I am praying for Microsoft and Google to step up the game (so far they are delivering, just at a snail's pace...Apple is just rehashing the same thing, over and over, so it remains to be seen if they can truly innovate again...they did it once, certainly possible, but not inevitable).

iOS looks archaic to me, almost childish. But it works, and well, so that's why I have it. W8 looks a light year ahead, in terms of design.

I am routing for MS and Google to squash Apple (I can't stand the closed designs, impossible iTunes, etc.).

Regardless, competition is good. It is good Apple is being challenged.

I'll buy the fist device that has the quality build and smoothness in the os. I'll pay for it, too.

MS really needs a Nexus 7 equivalent tablet. Even if they have to go 8 inches instead of 10. If they want people to take a chance, this is the way to do it. The Win 8 UI is great on tablets and phones, but we're all gun shy. However, if we could drop only $250ish to dip our toes, I think it would help gain traction a lot quicker. Especially amongst the Xbox crowd as they do more to integrate the platforms.

    • Or even 7 inches just like the Nexus. The UI works on a phone, it can work on a small tablet,ETM
    • Steve needs to take a full 14 inches.detritus
