On an iPhone, blue iMessages are always free?
When I send one in blue, the response is always gray.
Are all these free?

Not always. It will say text message before the message if its not

So conversations that say "iMessage" at the top are free for all back and forth, and conversations that say "Text Message" at the top are a charge for all back and forth?
The other person is always grey.

If it's green it's SMS (you pay), If it's blue, it's iMessage (free), if it's gray, it's a received message so it's not your problem, it's whoever sent it.

I'm not on a text plan right now, and I thought every one I received was a charge (Verizon) too?

AFAIK: You could be sending iMessage, they could be sending SMS. They will be paying (for their SMS), you will not (for your iMessages).

All you need to worry about is:
If it's green, you paid.
If it's blue, you didn't.
If it's grey, it's not your problem.

response is always gray for you, pay or free. It's free for the other party if their bubble is blue on their phone, not in yours..
green is money color
blue is the good color

and to be clear, if you send iMessage, the other person receives as iMessage too, so they should be able to respond as iMessage. If you try to send and it is/becomes green they don't have iMessage or it's unavailable at the moment.. (or you).

you only pay for 'incoming' text messages if its specifically stated that a third party is charging to send you those messages. Ie the whole joke text scam where you text them to start it and they send you assloads of texts and charge you for each one. otherwise you could basically just sit there and text your worst enemy all day long to get their bill in the thousands.

if its blue you're being intercepted by the FBI. If it's green it's just the CIA. Fucked either way. The grey will turn to black eventually.
