I have a client who needs to have their print book pdf/indesign file converted for ebook publishing through all the major distributors (kindle, amazon, etc). They said they had a service where you just upload the print pdf and the company converts it for a flat fee. Does anyone have experience with this? Are all ebooks .epub?

we did the layout for a book last year that went on to sell rather decently in print and was converted at the same time for an ebook. the publishing company did the conversion straight from the indesign files. there were a handful of scuffs (probably 5-10 over a 220 pg printed book), mostly where we had to force text around page layouts due to end of paragraphs being one line up from the bottom of the page and so on... but for the most part it looked good.

hmm yeah i just did a test form indesign and it does not look good. pages are all jumbled together and a bunch of missing tables and such. damnit. knew it wouldn't be this easy

i might have to try it from cs6. currently on cs 5 indesign version 7.0.4

PDFs don't always convert well to ePub. Completely dependant on the layout and structure of the file. For instance, the text won't reflow.
Coincidentally, i'm in a similar situation. need to convert several books I've designed to ePub formats readable by various platforms. Finding a way to do that with a fixed layout is also causing headaches

also, e-Books just means 'electronic' book - which can take the form of a PDF, iBook, Kindle, etc. there are a bunch of formats. Most conform to ePub standards (iBooks does not - although that may change tomorrow when they announce iBooks 3)

thanks gnash. i'm understanding more by the second. this book has several charts, tables, graphs, lists and other things that renders into an unusable letter and number soup. going to try and figure out a way to get this done otherwise I'll have to outsource.

I've tried that as well as Calibre (calibre-ebook.com/ ). not having much luck but I'm new to this world.
These guys have much useful info on their website:
http://ebookarchitects.com/conve…Tomorrow, Apple will likely announce iBooks Author 3. Rumour has it that it will conform to ePub 3 standards.
InDesign also exports to ePub, but you need to anticipate and design for eBook to begin with for it to work well.
- yeah. i wish i would have known before i laid it all out in indesign.JG_LB
