If it's tabular data, use a table. That's what they're for.

or... use flash

Use jQuery to take apart the table, ajax the data back to a neat little script which then pumps back a series of ul-li's.

You could theoretically use the CSS content attribute to inject markup into your HTML, but you'll have to target objects in the DOM anyway. Its also not compatible with all browsers. The semantic way is to use the correct markup for the context. Use a table for tabular data.

If you're dealing with spreadsheet or similar data by all means use HTML table elements — it's more semantic and structurally correct.
Use CSS to style said table. 'Nuff said.

Tables aren't a bad thing if used properly. no need to fake a table IMO.
- +1 this is why they exist, to show tabulated data innit.MrT

Use a bunch of nested UL's/LI's and float them all, and assign classes all over the place... If this is an experiment, then go for it, otherwise just use a damn table for tabular data.

wait... a huge number of nested DIV's isn't much more elegant than the dreaded blasphemous and supposedly genocidally evil HTML tables...

Imitating tables in css without the html code that put tables layout.
usually you do tables and apply css for style. I am trying to figure out if its possible to just use css to create a table layout without styling the html table code.
- it's possible, tons of DIVs but the code may be almost as ugly as HTML tables....vaxorcist

a table is an HTML element. CSS is a way to stylize elements. They are 2 different things
