I thought these were called 'pipes' and were from the computer age, so not really the sort of thing that should be included in real editorial or body copy?

I call them pipes too, but I remember they used to have a break in the middle, so the one on your keyboard today might not actually be a pipe... Some time after MS-DOS gave way to Windows, the break disappeared.
