It's not just about being social, it's about caring about something its original creators turned into a great product that had paying customers even before it was bought by Yahoo!
It's unbelievable that flickr to this day doesn't have an iOS app. They had everything to be what Instagram on iOS is today. Missed that huge opportunity.
And also lately lots of flickr users have been migrating to 500px

So they do have an iOS app, I think it came out in 2011. Way late, doesn't seem to be any good either.

totally guessing here.. but..
Yahoo programmers probably already have a bunch of interesting ideas and projects going that were probably stopped or hidden by previous non-geek management... because they were:
1. likely to cannibalize an exisitng product line
2. likely to "not be part of our powerpoint-i-fied mission statement"so..... Marissa may be able to FREE THE GEEK CODE!!!! if it's still there...
