generally a graphic novel is just a collection of an entire run of comics in one volume so you don't have to derp about collecting issues

Anything by Warren Ellis.

- Ben Templesmith can be an acquired taste for some people. I wouldn't recommend this for someone just getting into comics.DRIFTMONKEY

thanks, there some great looking stuff above. adding them to the list.
i guess i'll be needing to gather quite a few styles and genres - to help get a grip on how these things unfold a story appropriately.also, below is the style i'll be working in - if it sparks something else anyone can think of that i should look into, let me know. I realize it's really "comic-booky" which is why i'm looking for stuff that's heavily stylized.

Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud, a truly amazing comicbook about comics.
The art, the structure, the psychology... Required reading for everyone into comics and really entertaining.http://www2.fredosphere.com/imag…
The follow-up "Reinventing Comics" is good too.
