I know it's my ignorance in the world of fine art to understand why this painting sold for $120mil, but can anyone explain to me how a canvas with some pastels on it is worth this much?
Again I'm not saying it isn't worth it, I just want to know why it is. Isn't this a recreation of the original?

This is one of those paintings college students hang in their dorm rooms to feel artistic

Because there is a market for it? I think it's simple as that.

Art buying has nothing to do with the formal qualities of a piece of art or it's perceived symbolism.
Instead, it has everything to do with, "Who's pocketbook is fatter?"

Well considering there's 4 of these, I can't imagine what the first one costs. I wonder where it is.

Lol at this comment.
"Time for mankind to be exterminated. $120 million dollars for a crayola picture, billions and trillions of dollars for war...for oil, meanwhile people are starving and living on the streets."
- Still billions of dollars exchange everyday amongst the 1%teh

Certain artists create "real estate" value, where their work is like a plot of land that usually goes up in value, and is traded on a market... this is due less to the work itself but more to the aura surrounding the artist. Most artists lack this aura, hence their work never attains this sort of value.

It's become the worldwide icon for pain and anxiety. Much like PowerPoint. (Ballmer should buy the rights, make a great windows wallpaper or office startup screen).
