Has anyone on here ever used a headhunter to get a job?
Do they really exist in big cities like LA, NYC, SF?

Big city here. No particular success with recruiters, for years, until this one special opportunity came by.
If you're looking for their services I'd say go with it but don't expect anything. Rely on your self et al.
