Canons produce better video than the Nikon's.
Canon video dslr:
550d
600d
60d
7d
5dThe video quality on all of these is identical too. They down sample in exactly the same way. Obviously the low light will be better on the 5d due to its bigger sensor.
For the beat detail and sharpness in video the lumix GH1 and GH2 are still hugely better than all the canons though. The GH1 is fairly cheap too. Obviously the smaller sensor means slightly less shallow dof.
You can also use an array of old lenses via adapters on the gh range.

That's a good and accurate overview, Hombre_Lobo.

Nikon and Canon are both updating stuff in the next few months... the Nikon D3200 looks good for the price.... not out yet though...
The Nikon D7000 and D5100 have quite nice video in my experience...and I've shot with the 5D mark II, which is great if quirky as all hell, with the HDMI output NOT being full resolution, which is annoying when you're checking focus on an external monitor....

I have a 550D it's good.
Get some good lenses and the video is great, especially if you know after effects etc

Even if you're just toying, I'd still try and stick with Canon or Nikon, and if you're going to spend money, spend it on lenses. Good glass will last forever, camera bodies will be outdated in a few years.
