... for a print designer to use a decent, simple premade template for a web portfolio?
Or is it better to make a visually clean but undynamic and probably sloppily coded one myself?

I don't think that's lame. If you're a print designer, you'll probably be recognized as such and I doubt the person reviewing your work is expecting you to have a fully customized, unique website. Add a little bit of your own personal style to it, but rely on a good portfolio tool to show your work that doesn't require a bunch of work up front from you.

i do a lot of web work and i use a template for my portfolio.
too much to ask for to do my own site. i'd end up hating it 2 weeks later anyways.
