Sounds like a cool way to diversify his one's talents and to get a foot into the publishing world. It could/should open a few doors.

it's all a journey.
I think it's okay for a resume to read like a menu.
It's about finding your place.
The Chronicle Books fellowship is going to be an amazing experience and the potential for personal growth is huge!
If he/she's good enough to get the fellowship - they won't have a problem finding work afterwards.

Yeah, thanks. I think it's just hard to take a leap from a safe stable place - easy to get too comfortable in one spot and not take risks.
He doesn't know if he should tell his current boss that he's applying. Because on one hand if he doesn't get it, then no sense in rockin' the boat?
- don't mention this to the boss before you are accepted~!identity

The position for the fellowship may turn into something longterm after the 6 months.
Jobs at book publishers are a lot rarer than jobs at design companies. Like identity said he'll maybe learn a lot in the 6 months and it could lead to who knows where if he likes it .. maybe even doing his own publishing in the future.
