Shepard Fairey Pleads Guilty to Criminal Contempt in Obama 'HOPE' Poster Case
http://laist.com/2012/02/24/shep…
Fairey pleaded guilty to criminal contempt. He admitted to deleting some evidence in the case, fabricating other evidence and even arranging for a witness to support what he knew were false claims. The AP claimed that he had based his poster on a solo photograph of Obama, while Fairey initially claimed that he used a different photo where Obama was seated next to George Clooney. Fairey eventually admitted that the AP was right, and that he had gone to great lengths to cover up the truth.

Is pleading guilty the same as getting what you deserve? I suppose we'll find out.

The guy has no integrity; he's plagiarised a lot of work in the past and denied the associations, so I'm not surprised. Hope (ahm) he gets what's coming to him.

it's too bad he couldn't have worked out a deal. granted he used that pic, but it's not the pic, it's his interpretation of it.

Isn't it legal to use a source material if you sufficiently change it and make it into something new? Andy Warhol "stole" existing photos of Marylin Monroe and painted them... don't think he ever got sued.
- I think this was more about the cover up of the crime and not the crime itself that got him in trouble.Complexfruit

indeed, but read the story, he settled on fair use out of court, it was his cloak and dagger nonsense that has come back to bite his ass

Criminal contempt is a misdemeanor charge that carries a maximum penalty of up to six months in prison
He may spend a day or two in a celebrity cell if he gets any time at all. I'm sure he'll just get some community service.

great artist, unfortunately dumb as rocks. covering up was a really bad idea.

There is some hope, that perhaps people in this world will come clean and begin living the truth, instead of a lie. perhaps the world's powers and corporations could do the same.

This guy is really starting to bug me. I was working on a movie last year and created some art in the Russian Constructivist style. I submitted it to legal for clearance and the response I got was that Shepard Fairey was suing the pants off people who were using that style claiming that it was a rip of his work. I can't believe he is trying to claim a movement in design as his own. After lengthy arguments I had to shelve my art because Fox is worried about being sued by him.

Jailtime would only help get his name in the art history textbooks. And believe me, thats the goal.
