Sync iPhone Photos

Does anyone know how to sync selected photos on my Mac with my iPhone and NOT INCLUDE the full Photo Library photo? I don't know why it's doing this, but when I sync selected folders in iTunes, on the phone it has the full folder.
Slim info on this on the web so wondered if anyone else has had this problem.

use iphoto to create an album. add selected photos. then in itunes select the iphoto album you want to sync

But can't I do that without iPhoto? I have a folder specifically for photos to put on my phone - are you saying that managing that in iPhoto will solve the problem?

i think you can only sync one particular folder on your mac without iphoto

I sync multiple photos, just choosing them from iTunes. Maybe I'll give iPhoto a shot, but I've avoided using it since day one.
