If it's only been a year, and you feel burned out – yeah (I hat to say it but), you might want to seek out a different profession. There's a big difference between loving something and it being a good fit for you on a daily / work basis. Consider that you might actually have a shit job / boss and think about moving somewhere else for new people, sometimes you just have to move around.

i just kept doing what i do and i'm kinda happy so i guess it works for me.

It's really a complete bullshit profession when you really think about it. I mean yeah, you might be in love with making pretty shit. But in the end, you're just making way more money for someone else. You will never be happy, none of us are...we just lie to ourselves. Most of us wanted to be artists and grew up in an upper middle class home, and thought that design would be a way for us to be creative and still make some cash. Continuing down this path, you will die a little bit every day.

I'll add that pretty much everyone else is making money for someone else by the wayargybargy1 - who doesn't die a little bit every day!!!GeorgesII

- What a simplistic way of thinking. That you know what all of our economic backgrounds were and what drove us into this profession...Josev
- into this profession. Speak for yousrself. Maybe that you believe all we do is make pretty shit is your problem. It's designers who think like you who damage the profession.Josev

Your attitude is why you're not getting a job.

the problem seems to be not that you hate the industry, but that you don't know what you want to do within it. fine typography as a craft? wtf does that even mean? you want to be a type designer? well, if you're any good at that, there are plenty of ways to get exposure and make cashola.
it took me 10 years to be completely happy in this industry. i'm now a partner at a smaller agency here in Nashville, and things could not be better.
determine your goal and start working toward it.

Go freelance or get together with a group of like-minded designers and start your own company and chase the kind of clients and jobs you'd like to work for.
It'd be hard going to start off with, but if you'e got the talent then you'll get the clients.
When I was at art college there was a guy in the class who got involved with some church that got him questioning the whole consumerism/design/advertising = EVIL and he ended up nearly dropping out of the course because of it.
He saw the light and kept on designing. Just checked his facebook page after not being in touch for about 15 years and it looks like he's now an illustrator and doing origami stuff.
