Go to Robata Jinya on 3rd. http://www.jinya-la.com/ It's Japanese izakaya tapas style plates, and everything is good. Not expensive either.
El Carmen is good for Mexican and right down the street...more of a tequila bar, but they have a small menu too.
If you're looking for fancy fare, try Son of a Gun (for seafood), Animal (for meat), Fig & Olive, or .ink. And if you want a good place for lunch (other than a cheap Mexican hole in the wall), try ink.sack around the corner from .ink on Melrose, or hit up the Farmer's Market at the Grove.
Della Terra is good for Italian, and if you're looking for something cheap and unique to LA, head to Koreatown and get some all you can eat Korean BBQ or some pho. Oh, and if you want to stay relatively close to WH but still want some Korean BBQ, try Genwa Korean BBQ...a bit pricier than K-town, but closer and the small dishes they give you to begin your meal are insane (they surround the grill with about 23 plates).
Also highly recommend Pizzeria Mozza or Osteria Mozza and Susan Feniger's Street, all near Highland and Melrose.
Oh, and one last suggestion...you can find cheap eats at Palms Thai, home of Thai Elvis. Google it.
