Cheap tablet/laptop advice

My Mum's laptop has stopped working apparently and thought I'd get her something for Christmas.
ALL she does on it is check her email, do the odd google search and store her photos from her camera so it doesn't need to be anything fancy.
Can anyone suggest a cheap (but half decent) laptop or maybe a tablet? I like the idea of a tablet but do they generally come with a usb port? Maybe I could get her that and an HD for her photos.
Not looking to spend much more than £200 ideally. No idea about this kind of market so not sure if thats reasonable or not.
Any suggestions mucho appreciado !

Could go to £300 if it'll be worth it.

The HP Netbook is quite popular and falls in your budget.

Toshiba Thrive is 300 quid... yes, over budget, but it has a FULL size USB port, a mini USB port, and a real, full-size SD card port... I have a friend who loves his... you might get a US model for $340 or so,
US: cheaper:

(maybe you can get it shipped!)UK: expensive

i know it might seem a bit cheap but what about a second hand laptop? You can get an old dell or summat similar for £150 easy. And the other £50 goes on a decent bottle of whisky (Spice Tree is lovely and has a groovy box that will more than make up for the old laptop)

set,
Mom's love iPad 1's as they get them when their sons/husbands upgrade.
: )
Try to find her a new, refurbished or even open box iPad 1; 16GB Wi-Fi only to keep price down.
Not sure if their really is an alternative option?!
- yeh but how do you get pics onto it without any other computer?
no go for mother set.Hombre_Lobo - could buy an adapter but its extra monies. vax's thrive option is great, but ipads are idiot proof. tough call.Hombre_Lobo

whatever you decide, check ebay (and elsewhere) for the item and you may find it cheaper. i saved almost a grand on a MBP recently this way

ASUS Transformer 1. It will get Ice Cream Sandwich too and it is I believe around $285 now. Tegra 2, beautiful screen, well built, has HDMI output to your TV, and battery lasts for a long time.
Great quality but cheap tablet. Didn't think I could put those 2 in the same sentence but it is true.
I think some people here have it. Definitely the best tablet out of all even the ones from $400-$500.

errrr are you stupid set?
Why would you get her an inferior tablet / laptop that is just impersonating another device. Just tell her to save up for the single greatest accomplishment by man - An apple product.
If she gets an ipad or macbook, infact fuck that, just get her a power mac and stop being such a technological douche bag. Do you not realize that by owning an apple product her quality of life will increase three fold. It also makes immune to 8 out of the 10 most deadly diseases and makes you fly.
You sicken me.

Although to be helpful you could perhaps get any old laptop and put Ubuntu on there. Its really easy to use and does everything she needs it for. For my purposes it does everything but adobe apps and plays games, pretty good really. The interface is gorgeous (my fave computer interface actually) And its free!
I'm not sure about ubuntus new UI though, it is certainly more user friendly, but I really liked their old one, that's just me though.
DO IT!

Same situation as my folks. Bought them a refurb iPad 1 32gb Wifi and SD adaptor. It was about £320 all in from the Apple Store refurb area.
They love it, they interact with it much more than they did their laptop and everything just works. That in turn stops me from being the goto computer troubleshooter, money well spent on that alone.
