A question for WP designers

Been doing websites in WP recently, one designed/handcoded then integrated in WP, and 2-3 using themes that I reskinned to suit the client's brand.
Both ways seem to raise their own issues - technical issues for the first (issues in the back-end that need fixing after I've handed it over), or customising issues for the second (less freedom in how it looks / works).
I'm no expert so just curious to hear how other people go about it - do you find it easier, after a couple of websites, to build your own themes from scratch, or do you buy templates then customise them to suit?
I'm still undecided so interested to hear other peoples experience.. Ta :)

I used to get other templates and build from them but I now find it less painless building from scratch.
Some elegant looking themes are very inelegantly coded (perhaps deliberately to hinder backwards engineering) and I just find it easier to build the basic shell from scratch, then customise plugins and widgets.

really depends on the job and the template. If the template is very close to what the outcome is going to be, same time and start with the template. If not, build from scratch. You're right, both have their pros and cons

Cheers Orrin and dbloc. Have you guys ever had problems further down the line with themes you've built, after a wordpress update? Never had any issues with my HTML sites so I guess I'm a bit worried about depending on a structure that gets updated regularly...

it's really easy.

Build from scratch, usually use a blank framework. Ive used:
Starkers - http://starkerstheme.com
SandBox (OLD, hasn't been updated in a while) - http://wordpress.org/extend/them…Currently building out one using Thematic
http://themeshaper.com/thematic/…Never used a template to modify, usually everything I do is from a custom design.
- Thanks Armando. I've seen those but haven't used them.. will look into it. Cheers dude.isakosmo

Always build from scratch. Or better yet, build yourself a very basic framework that has all the standard template files, and use that as a starting point for all your projects.

Always from scratch, or my own modified boilerplate theme. It can be a pain in the ass to learn how each template is built.
