Travel industry in recessions

Out of curiosity, anyone know – or, at least, know to look for data – about how the travel and tourism industries perform during recessions (like this one), and what kind of money they spend on marketing and advertising?

I'm talking not only about private companies like tour operators, hotels, resorts, etc, but also regional tourism organisations, government tourism-related initiatives and so on.

I've got an idea to start pitching for clients like this, but really haven't got much info to go on.

Thoughts from anyone in the know?

i design for the luggage and travel industry. a few great resources to check out are the airlines, the airports, the hotels, the hotel staff, the baggage handlers in front of hotels, the TSA website, the weather, the retail stores, the dept stores, the products that are sold the products that are concepts, the hardware vendors, the manufacturers, mass market luxury ideas behind the fantasy.. go!!

    • How would you characterise business during this recession? Steady? Dipping? On the increase?Continuity
    • For design, I mean.Continuity
    • thats kinda trick question.. in design you are challenged to solve the needs of the client..epill
    • with recession or not.. for product development we must always design with a price..epill
    • that price may or may not change during a recession but a company's funds will..epill
    • so design is hurt by the lack of resources that may or may not be in place as funds are tight..epill
    • but technically.. funds are always tight.. recession or not..epill
