It would depend on what she would use it for.
HTC Jetstream / Motorola Xoom / Samsung Galaxy Tab are good alternatives.
Amazon Kindle / HTC EVO or Flyer are smaller forms.
If you are looking to buy something that would last 2-3 years, I would say iPad. Most of these are made of plastic and are not sturdy. Additionally, Android market place is very empty as it is only supporting 3.4 million tablets. Developers tend to make an iPad app first and make Andriod as almost as a gratuitous gesture.
- Agreed about the adroid market. I have an android smartphone. Although there are some great games to be found.d_rek

She would be using it for mainly the following from highest priority to lowest:
Web browsing
Reading
Email
Movies
Music
Apps
GamingDefinitely need something that's durable.

To wit... it would be used mostly around the house.
The reason I want to get her a tablet is because currently we have a single laptop we share and she is always setting it in extremely compromising places (ie: edge of the couch, table, on top of a box, on a pillow, in the bed, etc). I'd like to get her the tablet so she has something more portable when she's sitting on the couch or in bed or even using our elliptical machine.
The laptop i'd rather have stay stationery as it is my primary work machine.

The Kindle Fire ships next month. I'd say that's your best alternative to the iPad, given that it's only $200. It's smaller, has less memory, etc., but it's a full-color, touch interface. Reviews I've read thus far are all positive.
- Agreed. I think the Fire is the only other tablet worth considering.Nathan_Adams
