From the Times
For decades, Flanders has taken pride in its flag depicting a rampant roaring lion brandishing blood-red claws.
Now, however, leaders of Belgium’s Dutch-speaking region have accused the medieval beast of terrifying investors and visitors and have opened a competition for a friendlier Flemish logo.
Kris Peeters, the president of Belgium’s most prosperous region, said the fierce animal was sending the wrong message.
“Flanders stands for an open and warm society. Sadly, not everybody is convinced. Especially abroad, the picture of how people see Flanders is very fragmented,” he told a parliamentary conference. Mr Peeters was speaking as Flemish and French-speaking politicians tied up a pact that should end Belgium’s record 16 months without a working government.
Another classic case of redesigning the logo hoping that will be enough rather than changing a company ethos?

Oh, dear. Rather than worrying about regional heraldry, perhaps they should exmaine their policies to see if they're visitor/investor-friendly.
By their argument, Germany – Europe's best performing economy for ages should have stayed in the economic gutter, based solely on their coat of arms:

What utter tosh.
- Either that, or visitors and investors need to grow a pair.Continuity

You have to think about Flanders before you can get the wrong impression.

if that's scary, I mean, something isn't right with people. if they change their flag, with all of it's history, they should be shot.

Rebranding signifies change.
So although a simple flag redesign will not solve their issues, it can become a marker to represent an official change in policy and philosophy.
So yes, this is a good thing to do.
Now having a design competition for a logo is probably not.

My guess is ,they'll never gonna change it, to much pride involved.

I don't live here very long but the first impression is that people here are very friendly and generous, the country is in ok financial state, and there is a lot of foreign companies and investors...I don't think that the flag should mean anything today, it is there for ages... I wouldn't mess around with history and culture by changing the flag...
I personally don't think that the lion with red claws is more scary than bear, eagle, hawk or any other lion...
one of the countries that has to think about their flag is Saudi Arabia... they have a saber on their flag FFS!?!?!?! now that could scare investors :D

FFS - are you sure it wasn't the market volatility or interest rates?
smoke and mirrors...

More importantly - it a country that has been without a functioning government for 16 month.
16 MONTHS!!!
maybe they should tell the government to go fuck themselves and take their silly ideas about flags with them.
P.S. I'm sure if it was a WHITE lion there would be none of this talk.
racists.

487 days without a government, and counting. You'd say that this is what scares investors. No?
No. They're right. change the flag and all will be well.

Try running this idea by a crowd of Flanders flag waving Flemish at a Cyclocross race and see how long it takes for this to get rejected.
