Because the '98 is in again, I suppose.
Because in TV everything has shadow and bevels. Also, don't forget the fake reflection. It is in there as well.

no, it's because everyone has a copy of cinema4d and greyscale gorilla on their bookmark tab (i know i do!). it's trendy. get over it. at least they got the reflections on the floor right. seems like the photo was taken on glass though so that's good. no room for error.

From a marketing stand point it's a good piece... your discerning eye can't find any genius in the design and it bums you out.

As technology advances, virtual stuff gets more real.
10 years from now, you will need 3D glasses to view all logos.

I don't have a problem with it.
What's it supposed to just be line art for the purists who liked line art before you did ?
These items are represented as objects. Concepts like shadowing, and perspective and specular lighting are all aspects of viewing real objects, so naturally they are involved in rendering something so that it might appear more real. How the fuck are you supposed to make something look more realistic without these techniques ? Hack the optic nerve and send raw sense data to the visual cortex ? Not yet. Even then there'll be a post moaning about 'why is everthing realSenseViz™ now, what was wrong with a real image ?'
People fucking moaning in the caves of Lascaux 50000 years ago - too many animals, everyone's doing animals now.
Just because you can take a question about an aspect of design and apply it to another aspect of design doesn't mean it's valid.
Shit looks more realistic, 3d, as if light it shining on it. So what ?
Less round things ? wtf, dude ? What would you do ?

Because you can charge them more for the work involved in making it 3D and the clients are excited about it.
