When I open the same PSD file in preview and PS the colours in preview look as though there is a semi transparent white layer over the top. PS is much darker / blacker. Is there a way of calibrating the two to look the same? How do you change previews colour profile?

It's simulating paper and ink as how it would display in that context.

genius, I had no idea that existed!
Next question! The files look as they should when previewing as fogra coated. When using fogra uncoated the contrast / blacks are WAAY too high. Is that because it's simulating more ink for uncoated paper?

also...proofing in preview gives a whole different image to the proof of the same file in indesign, using the same profile. Nightmare. Best just play and print till it's right I think!

Stop proofing on your screen. You're probably stressing yourself out more than is necessary. Leave the hard work to the printers.

Right, monospaced. No matter what calibration or profile you spend your time setting up is not going to alter a printed job or proof.
