or
128GB SSD + a 500GB portable drive

Get the smallest HD (500GB I guess) and buy a SSD drive from OWC, much faster and likely cheaper. Swap drives, use the 500GB as external.

I got the 5400 rpm 500gb in my i7 mbp with the intent on swapping to a SSD.
turns out the 5400 serves me well enough and I'm completely happy with it. didn't want to shell out for an ssd and didn't want to have an external for all my files
