right,
550D best video - manual video control - autofucs during video sucks
A35 - good video - no manual video - incredible autofocus during video, it can do 10fps stills at full resolution, and autofocus between each shot!
d3100 - good video - i dont think it has manual control.
If high quality video is the priority then the 550d is the clear choice, but if you dont want manual control, the A35 is a great choice.
I love the A35 & 550d. The a35 is awesome, very light, bright screen, great ergonomics. All the awesome features sony brought in like in cam HDR, 10fps, panorama etc
The video quality of the a33 / a35 is underated too, not too different from the 550d -
But one massive consideration is the Single Translucent Mirror of the sony. it basically has a mirror that doesnt move, instead, it reflects 30% light to an autofocus sensor, which allows for crazy autofocus speed during video and burst shooting. -
(note this is the A77 but its autofocus during video is the same)BUT losing 30% of light to allow this fast autofocus during video is no small statement. Thats a big chunk of light. Its then not ideal for low light.
(note the a35 is an updated model to the a33)
I love the a33/a35 the ergonomics are great whilst the body size is small (which is impressive because i have slightly larger than normal hands), and its very light. I just wish it didn't have this Translucent mirror which steals 30% of the light.
The nikon d3100, great cam, video is ok, but i prefer the canon and sony lens selection.

Note also that the. NIkon d3100 and d5100 will not autofocus with nikon AF-D lenses... including the lovely 85mm f1.8 and other great and affordible older lenses.... the d7000 does AF withese lenses and the total price can make it worth it if as an 80-200 f2.8 AF-D is over a thoussnd less than the brand new AF-S equilivent.
Also note that sony DSLRs will mount old minolta Af le ses like the 135 f2.8 and the so-called "beercan" f4 zooms
Not sure if all old minolta AF lensez work with full AF on all sony DSLRs though... maybe somebody here knows

Probably Canon 550D from what you explain....
for narrow depth of field, get a 50mm F1.8 for $120,shoot close distance at F1.8.... for tripod-mounted manual focus-pulling, get an old Nikon 50mm F2.0 AIS manual focus lens on ebay for $50 or so and then a $20 Nikon to Canon adapter....
if you want deep depth of field, where everything is in focus, get the powershot, not a DSLR....
I have to admit I don't know the sony much....
The nikon D5100 is better than the D3100 by far....

Canon 550D is pretty awesome. It's got the same specs as the 7D.

I like the Nikon D3100.
For low light, you'll need a wide open aperture lens. Like the 50 mm 1.4.
