I like that second one JSK.

I’m going to buy a bike for a low impact alternative to running and to kill my dependency on the MTA.
Any tips for a beginner pro ride. Will be using bike to join rides in the future! A ride for hills and that can withstand wind would be great.

* join NYCC. They have lots of organized group rides around the 5 Burroughs. A good way to meet other cyclists and find some with similar goals.
* it's almost always best to buy your first bike used until you define your usage and then you have a better idea of what type of bike to buy. (people almost always ignore this advice because they want sparkly and new.
* wind and hills are two different bikes. you can spend thousands of dollars bringing those two things to a zero point.
* buy a light road bike with at least Shimano 105 gearing on it. The new 105 is brilliant. From 105 you can upgrade to the better stuff later. buy a decent bike that fits you. and when the time is right you can upgrade on wheels that are lighter and deeper (more aero).
* outside of handbuilt bikes, almost every bike sold is made by 2 companies overseas. And one of those is partially owned by the other. Most bike brands are made in the same place. You largely are paying for branding and then to some degree materials and degree of difficulty in manufacturing. But mostly branding.
* have fun. and don't forget to get across the GWB. most of the best cycling in the Tri state is about leaving NYC.
- oh, and NEVER leave your bike outside. all bikes get stolen eventually. There aren't theft-proof locks; just deterrents.MrAbominable
- Wow. This is an amazing response. Thank you. i'll let you know what I pick up.
What are the 2 overseas companies? Where?notype - I will chain it up and remove the front wheel & seat and hold it to my chest while walking around. Seriously.notype
- Giant and Merrida.MrAbominable
- Also, if you're looking to really spin up your riding check out NYCC's SIG spring clinics. Highly recommend. You should still be able to make the signups.MrAbominable
- Thanks man, I really appreciate this; I'm going to check them out this week. I'm a member of 3 running groups - feels like I'll be cheating on my favorite g/fnotype

- don't get the Specialized. a few reasons but specifically because it's 3 rings up front. Only go two.MrAbominable
- The Cdale Caad 10 might be a good choice. Can't tell what group set it has on it which would dictate price. At 52cm i should sell you one of my old bikes. ;)MrAbominable
- Going to take myself to the Hudson next weekend... can't wait.notype
- Buy used, yes. At least 105, no. Not until you decide what you want in a bike. In NYC, I'd want flat bars instead drops for better maneuvering.section_014
- ^ question included speed and climbing. So NOT a city bike in structure.MrAbominable
- we need pics of the Allez!MrAbominable

question for bike heads, what's the best way to remove the gears from a rear wheel without the need of specialised medieval torture devices?
just shit i might have around the shed.
- this i mean: https://www.parktool…_niko
- You want to remove the cassette? An old chain and a strong lad who holds it while you turn the screw. Or some cable ties:Longcopylover
