deconstrukt,
It means that by default, i-devices store their backup in the ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/ on the main hard drive. iTunes does not provide a way of changing this backup location like, say, the iTunes music library can be moved around.
So, the instructions in that link are about how to use Terminal to change the location of that backup, so that you can put it on an external drive to save space on a smaller SSD.
With 500, I doubt you'll care, but I had an iPad backup that was 42GB - moving that and my iphone backup to my external drive was wonderful.

I was in a situation where i needed a new computer bad, so i said fuck it.
theres always gonna be something new around the corner and even if you do manage to wait for the new ones you still gotta wait for them to work out all the bugs and try to buy it mid cycle... too much drama to deal, just get one now if you like what they have, if you don't then wait.

thanks for the heads up... was gonna get my lil sis a macbook....

what are you talking about willis?
my macbook came with lion, my keyboard works fine and if i need a complete reinstall ill just take it to the apple store and upload my time machine back up.
ninja you crazy
- shipped with Lion preinstalled? this was not my understanding from other forums but please correct if wrong.horton
- yes. out of box, new. with lionsofakingbanned

I got i7 15" when they first came out. boggles my mind that it's already considered old and "do not buy!"
anyway I really don't think apple is going to change the unibody design anytime soon. it's solid and look at how long the macpro has looked the same? 10+ years?
- Pro market isn't as fickle as the consumer market though.Amicus

I think the only change to the unibody design would be to remove the optical drive and taper it down like the Macbook Air. But if you need a computer buy it. There will always be a new one around the corner regardless of when you buy one.

Previous body style lasted 5 years, from PowerBook G4 in 2003 until the MacBook Pro 2008. Current style has been around for 3 years, that's quite long already.

Just wanted to post and say I've been up and running with my new MBP for about 4 days now and I'm blown away by how fast this is compared to my old 2007 version. I got the 128 GB SSD drive, and a new 1TB WD Passport Studio Firewire drive for my external storage. It's pretty wild how near instantaneous some things are with this computer.

yup! love mine. didn't go for the sad though. baller $_$

For anyone who has or may be getting an SSD, this will be your best friend:
http://osxdaily.com/2011/03/05/h…
Provides a walkthrough on how to move the MobileSync backup folder to an external drive to free up space on the SSD. I just did it, it was tricky with Terminal, but got it done. If you do this and run into any issues, send me an email.

*bump
I stated above that current MBP's are not shipping with Lion *preinstalled* but sofaking says I'm crazy. Can anyone confirm?
My understanding was they ship with free "up to date" program for Lion install.
Had read on Macrumors that there's some f-keys that still need to be changed for true Lion nativity.
ex. see #267, #268...
http://forums.macrumors.com/show…- dude i just got one less than 2 weeks ago. lolsofakingbanned

do not worry about ARM. it will still be Intel.
Here is more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM…

you know what that is?
thats if you go to let say the apple store or best buy and purchase the preconfigured macs they have in stock from before the Lion release
...you get what I'm saying?
I got mine about 2-3weeks ago but mine was custom, so of course they uploaded the latest software on it.
I'm sure if i got whatever they had in the store I probably would've got their remaining stock.

also, if the keyboard thing you speak of is the (F1-F12) buttons then yea, thats been updated to reflect changes made in lion
- sofakingbanned0
I was in the same boat as you. i was rockin an iMac G5 isight forever!!! I held off on a new macbook for as long as i could.
finally got a new one a couple weeks ago, went all out. macbook 17 with anti glare screen, i love it and its fucking fast :D
I figure a new mac is always around the corner, if you like what they currently offer then jump on it.

thanks yeah that makes sense, custom builds shipping with Lion installed, stock units maybe not.
re. keyboard, this is what I'm referring to:
"And, as seen in Apple's standalone keyboards, the company has also quietly tweaked the MacBook Pro's keyboard to convert the F3 key's function from Exposé to Mission Control and the F4 key's function from Dashboard to Launchpad."
