Online shop: Social or self hosted?

What is the best kind of online store? Should I go for something closed and self hosted like Wordpress, bigcartel (or similar) or go for something social like an Etsy store?

Depends what you're selling I guess? If it's your own/clients creations you probably should start off small using Etsy or the like.
Building a decent e-commerce store will take a lot more time and cash to do right. Though obviously is more fitting if you have a decent sized catalogue.

why not do both? Surely it's best to sell the little beasts in as many places as possible?

if you want to go social bear in mind that you will have direct competitors right next to you. If you don't have a loyal client base, leading them to etsy can be a commercial suicide.
