The worst drought of the last 60 years in East Africa is taking lives everyday. QBN has a good slogan, a better tomorrow can be achieved altogether.
I quote from Tibor Kalman "In my lifetime, I have witnessed the creation of the greatest accumulation of wealth in history.
More than we need to feed the hungry, house the homeless, cure the sick throughout the world." He tried to change the world with design and I don't think he wasted his time.

just donated, feels alright.

it's good cause, but unfortunately 90% of it goes to administration. 10% makes it to the people. If they can get the food through, that it, that's generally the issue.
- So that stops you from donating at all?Gucci
- it makes me think twice about it, yes, being that I'm broke myselfpopfodders
- if you're posting in this thread than chances are you're doing alot better than the child in the photo at the top of the page.bogue
- you KNOW 90% goes to overhead or are you just being skeptical and pessimistic?monospaced

There's a fair bit of aid trying to get through, I understand, problem is the local military/militias are standing in the way.
- that's what I meant in my post, it's not that easy and eve if it is dropped from planes it's usually hijacked by rudiespopfodders

looking at how much money is donated over the years to african peoples it doesnt look like its really done much but help produce more generations of poverty stricken beings. seems like more torture when they only get enough to keep suffering. the plus side of the drought is if the weak die out than there is more resources for the strongest of their people to recover. smaller but stronger numbers is a good thing vs lots of weak. always gotta look at the silver lining
- I kinda like that Nazi Darwinist view.dobre
- yes darwin was a nazi. and nazis look at life as it is. might not be fairytale happy ending but thats the fatal flaw with realitydeathboy

- just somrthing i think about when i see donation boxes. and wonder if the good intentions do more harmdeathboy
- they do. In the USA good intentions appeared in 1970's and shit started going downhill for poor people.Pupsipu

i think the waste on administration cost is a valid point, well documented for large globals like UN-orgs, red cross, etc.
if you mind them, there´s smaller, more effective NGOs to give to. some even guarantee 100% bang for the buck in the region > their administration lean and done by volunteers.
- Pupsipu0
donations only help when they don't reach poor people, like when administrators get richer. If they do reach poor people they fuck up their economy and make it even worse in the long term.

You can all afford to give something so do it.
Are you aware that the canadian government will match your donation dollar for dollar.
There is nothing to whine or bitch about, send some money it will go twice as far as you thought it would .

Donated. Govt. of Canada matched it. Yay Canada!
ps. that top photo breaks my heart every time.

i posted hitler baby to make a statement about how rediculous the above picture is.

Sadly, these organizations do not want your help. They just want your money. Try and volunteer and all you get is a big button that says "DONATE". There is no nation, like donation.

The horror is that real help isn't wanted in that region. The warlords don't want your help. They want your money. It will be miserable year after year if those criminals are still in power.

The picture as it was didn't get much response because white people are already used to the ritual of these shocking images combined with a call to donations. These donations haven't made a difference in decades.
I was just trying to use my design talent to reframe the issue as something positive. I think too often, self important white people don't see those living in Africa as equals. They see them as bums, lazy, crazy etc. This is a dangerous perception that designers need to fix. Instead of framing the issue as help and charity we should frame it as a struggle of a people to become prosperous. That's what we do here and can therefore relate to.
