Is this somehow a Racist gesture in your country?
In Brazil this is a compliment to Japanese people, but it seems this is a racist thing in some Asian countries.

Could be anything else?

I never thought that was racist thing until living in a country like Australia. And I am from a Latin American country. I think Brasilians and Japanese have an understanding.
I think that would be consider racist in a country like USA, Australia etc.
- Really? racist is racist... FULL STOP.necromation
- I guess depends in the culture you were born in. And the world is more sensitive these days.numero1
- Isn't there a huge Japanese population in Brazil? Feasible that it could mean something completely different there...rascuache

If this was an AD in the UK it would be considered 'inappropriate', therefore banned.

Brazilians would say its a complement but japanese or any other asians in brazil says it not.

So if they all "blacked up" that to would be cool?
if this is okay where your from, you need to face fact that you are in a racist country... My girl is from Australia, and sometimes the shit that comes outta her mouth is amazing. She wouldn't class herself as racist but she has come to realize that there is quite a problem in Oz, and it's been that way for a really long time.
- Examples? It might be a problem for some in Australia, but they're mostly either nationalistic bogans, or out-of-touch media personalities.Nathan_Adams
- Never date australiansanimatedgif
- australians are programmed racistsHAYZ1LLLA
- Australians are the most racist people on the planet, after the JapaneseAncillary
- So we'll generalise all Australians as racists. Right, got it.Nathan_Adams

I went to the website and it seem like a british website. I dont even think it will make the news in Brasil. And it will be nice to see what a Brasilian thinks about it. They might try to explain what is the relationship between Brasilians and Japanese.
It seems like a Japanese team will go and play santos so I am sure they ran it with them. Brasil and Japan have a special relationship
And some people in Australia are pretty ignorant and racist
- I am sure you have spoken about that with your gf

Hey numero1 I am a Brazilian, and I am quite intolerant when I heard any racist/homophobic/xenophobic people say something.
I have plenty japanese friends, the drummer of my band was Japanese in fact, and this gesture -at least- in Brazil was really fine, that's why I never thought it would racist.
And yep, it is making lots of news in media in Brazil, I found this in a Brazilian website before that UK one.

I can tell that for South America it's not racist at all.
- numero10
@ChrisRG yes, I thought in Brasil the ad would be fine. And that it wasnt racist to them at all. I am pretty sure they asked the Japanese team what they thought of it.
I can see how the UK media will take it as racist.

*shrugs* Last time I was in Japan in the little Brazil/Japan section of my wife's city there were plenty of ads of black faced characters that would be considered highly racist in the States. I shrugged. She shrugged.
As people have pointed out there's a different relationship between Japan and Brazil - Brazil has the largest population of Japanese people outside of Japan, and the Japanese are highly respected there. Back in Japan it's a mixed bag with that, but it's still different.
And it's a whole different mix of meaning and metaphor than any of the European or American countries that had slavery or a hand in the slave trade...
So in the US, that'd be racist, but in Japan or Brazil? *shrugs*

- monospaced0

- They don't think that. In Brazilian culture that is complementary indeed.chrisRG
