Yikes, looks like they're going to DEPRECATE the mysql extension in php, so things like mysql_query will throw an error. Fuck me, I've written thousands of those. Surely 'upgrading' to like PDO is not that hard, but ..

i always want to dig into msqqli or PDO but just dont have time or really dont see the point.

This is a really good thing, and quite common in other languages too.
You can completely disable deprecation warnings by editing php.ini and it'll work fine for you.php6 won't support it though, but the result will be a cleaner language in the end (php has way too many functions in the global namespace).
The real only benefit to mysqli is that it has a an OOP interface.

yes... and database abstraction is also good for a different reason...
say your boss's boss goes out to play golf with a slick salesperson from Oracle...
...then you may have to suddenly convert EVERYTHING to oracle... with a few lines in a config file, or a major rewrite? ah...
- of course, some IT departments see this sort of shit rewrite as a full-employment act for their friends who are consultants...vaxorcist
