Make something similar to this effect.
http://iksi.tv/When you move over the photo it changes the pictures etc.. Do you need to create transparent buttons or is there a better way?

Quick look at the source code shows images in a UL, with animation controlled in the JS file with jQuery.

-- you have a series of images
-- you have a javascript mouseover event attached to that image (or rather a wrapper div over your group of images)
-- When you mouse over, you grab the event object, inside of which is a attribute like "cursorPosX" or something like that.
-- Have a group of if statements or a switch statement that show one image and hide the rest depending on what the value of "cursorPosX" is

thanks all for the input. It looks easier than it is. Downloaded the js file and it's like forever long. In my mind this should be doable easier. Will try the replicate what Toxic said.
