I am thinking about the bars that sit stationary on the bottom of the pages for searches/other things

I hide those things at first sight.

what if you're browsing a product catalog site with loads and loads of options for items related to your work – so you'd need to print out swatches and save searches? so the more robust/functional the search is the easier time you have completing your job. still you would kill the task bar on first sight?

^ This has never happened to me, and I'd expect such features to be more integrated anyway. You don't need a task bar to save searches or queue prints.

the task bar would have of the search parameters – not the print/save to folder functions. we're building a site with four different ways to search a catalog and i'm trying to come up with ways to lay this out so it's not so overwhelming – requiring a lot of de-coding time just to understand which search option is your best option *before* you even get into the meat of a very heavy search.

i'll nix the task bar idea – had no idea it was a rejected/annoying design element.

99% of sites put their search either at the top right or in the sidebar.
