Hi.
I'm kinda interested in this but i'm pretty sure most of these effects can be done fairly easily with a little bit of practice - please be aware my PS skills are kinda medium level. ish.
So is this worth getting? Or should i just follow some tutorials and gain the knowledge that way?

Gain the knowledge. If it gets too frustrating, and you have the cash to spare, buy the filter. I don't mean to disparage Mister Retro's handiwork; it's a pretty sharp filter. But furthering your understanding of Photoshop and acquiring new source material should pay off and might help you with other projects. (Cue the "More You Know" shooting star and rainbow)
