Anyone have experience creating Wordpress themes?
I want to add some additional functionality to a theme and not quite sure where to start. Basically I'd like to have users upload images to create a slideshow on the homepage and then control this through the admin panel.
Any good tutorials out there on adding this kind of functionality?

Have you had a look into BuddyPress?

Is that like a starter template or template framework?

I would like to learn how to write all this stuff from the ground up, but if there is an existing open source theme to learn from that would be good too...

Looks decent for dragging and dropping templates and you can add your own CSS.Problem with this is that it looks like it still just created a wordpress "blog" website.
Wordpress themes are pretty easy to tweak and add functionality to with a bit of CSS/HTML knowledge.
If you are doing the site for a client then try to match up a theme to what's MOST suited to their needs before pitching designs and base your designs on that template. This means it'll need minimal tweaks ;)

actually just did exactly what you are trying to do - look into nivo slider and integrate that into wordpress using magic fields. awesome.

...serious?
naaa... you're not serious.

It's not what I'd call an advanced customisation... Nivo Slider (or any slider actually) and Magic Fields for administration, unless you'll go with Flickr like I did here on Dyspl's http://www.littlecloud.fr
Not sure about tutorials, you just google stuff or post detailed questions when you have them here or on YH... Internet is full of WP advice and most answers are out there.

You need to learn to write wp plugin if you want to control something with the admin interface(check their API), also if you're good at php you could hack it all with plain php.

^ or you could try using Magic Fields, they allow you to easily build templates for custom admin interfaces, i.e. add image upload fields (either with access to Media Library or independently of it).
I would say using MF or tampering with functions.php was easier than writing your own plugins.
