If we manage to develop a self improving AI that will not kill us, can you imagine what human kind will able to achieve?

Just to play devil's advocate...it's far from a sure thing that a super intelligent AI that can think and reason on its own is inevitable.
We don't even understand how the human brain works, so how can we create a virtual version of it that is just as good?

^ I haven't watched the video but I assume the point is that we won't create something just as good as our own brain... We'll create something that will self improve and eventually get to that stage... and beyond.

Legions of Dumb [ non sentient] AI's are already ruling this planet. Our financial markets are run by supercomputers making micro second trades faster than any human can. The people who run these things are making billions and distorting anything remotely resembling a human driven economy. We're just going along for the ride, and their only going to get faster and better at it.
Our transport systems, distribution systems, the decision whether to give you a loan or not - all dumb AI systems.
I for one would be hopeful of a human-like AI, because these dumb, fast, efficient AI's are going to be the fucking death of us.
- yea, but I dont know abut ruling. They just serve their purpose.monoblanco

For what I have read and viewed there is a consensus, and very similar concerns among computer scientists about where AI is headed. Because of that they created the Singularity Institute for AI.
http://singinst.org/Very interesting lectures available on line about both AI and nano technology.

AI is like progress in Brazil - always thirty years away.

@ TheBlueOne, I think you missed the memo.
Brazil is already the largest economy in S. America. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9548…I much rather listen to the weird looking bearded guy with the PHD.
