Just curious, on job hunting I got referred to a publisher that is looking for a graphic designer.
I always assumed publishers were just the middlemen in getting books made.
But am I mistaken? Do publishers work to design books as well? Do they collaborate with artist in making books?

well yes, there are artists who self publish their own work. and there are publishers who hire artists to give more opportunities to their profits and open a larger field of jobs for you, who can get referred.
best of luck.

i have a friend who's a graphic designer at a (university) publishers - he spends most of his day reviewing the print files and making adjustments based on their machines. tweaking bleed margins and checking for fonts and so on.

^ doesn't sound like much design. More of what I thought. Thanks.

I thought publishers just fronted the money sort of. Thought of it as business people, not design people.
- They choose and pay for those who design their books. Is not that enough?Miesfan

there's only 3 options.
a) agency or design studio
