So I found the codec I'm missing:
http://www.calibratedsoftware.co…it's $90 bucks.
I'm pretty sure last year I got around this installing a free codec, anyone knows of an alternative? I just want to make sure there's no other options before I buy it.

that looks like an app for exporting video, I just need a codec, otherwise exporting all this footage is going to take me another day.I appreciate the answer though

I have VLC, but quicktime is what I'm more comfortable using when I have to grab a few seconds of a clip before going to after effects.
It just sucks that they are not compatible being all products of apple.Sounds like something you would experience with "the other guys" (who I won't name, to keep this thread in check, at least till I get it solved :)

Find out what codec they used and go here:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/r…'Command i' in quicktime - will bring up the movie info and show what codec it needs too.
For tough ones... i use this free service: (works great on .flv's)

MediaInfo for mac (http://www.apple.com/downloads... might help you figure out the codec being used.
I've had some trouble recently with DVCPro encoded files on machines that didn't have Final Cut installed and used this soft to import into AE: http://www.calibratedsoftware.co…
good luck!
