Cool! I was a subscriber to SOS for several years, but I got bored with it, they seemed to have the exact same articles every month.

One of the most versatile is Rob Papens Predator IMO.
http://www.robpapen.com/predator…- Yes. All the Rob Papens are good. Blue, Predator, the other one..mikotondria3
- I second this.MikeColdFusion

Massive. :P
Absynth was always good, not too up on the others.
Truth is you always output a truck load of new material if you get a Native Instruments synth, I always find they really let you let rip and hoof out walloping great chunks of stuff you didn't know was in you, light up some of the dark. Some synths and sample cheat-piles let you refine and perfect a bit of a style you've already got, but the NI stuff is really always game-changing.
Absynth then, if you've not got Massive.

That's what I'm looking for: something inspiring and game-changing.
What about Spectrasonics Omnisphere? That looks intense.
- Yeh, heard good things about it. Huge install and libraries and such.mikotondria3

OSCar just has a sound of its own with awesome filters.
Also Image-Lines Harmless is neat.
Oh and musnt forget this lot from Korg....

Yeah, the Papen stuff does have a good rep.
See, this is the situation. I know there's a lot of good softsynths out there. I'll want to get more and more and more as time goes by.
But I really want help in deciding which to get next. I have Reason 5.0, and Logic 8.0, so I have a lot of basics covered.
What one to buy next?

Reason or Ableton

The Harmless won't work on my Mac.

Aalto looks pretty cool. Not as cool as a real modular, but cool none the less

Predator is good. Don't rate Blue at all.
My favourite of the moment is Vanguard
http://refx.com/products/vanguar…The good ol Korg Legacy Collection is full of classic sounds.

SOS has an article every month about:
1) Installing acoustic foam in someone's house
2) An inexpensive microphone that they rate highly
3) An expensive microphone they think is super wonderful
4) A super-expensive piece of hand-built eq or compressor or mic pre
5) An article about how to mic drums, vocals, or guitars
6) An article about a famous recording, and how the drums, guitars and vocals were miced on it
7) An article about how nobody knows how to mic drums, guitars or vocals anymore
8) An article about how a famous song was mixed using $500,000 worth of gear, to sound like another $.10 single.
9) An article about how hard it is to make any money in the music business
10) An article about the new update to Cubase, Reason, Ableton, ProTools, or LogicI've gotten a bit tired of the formula.

Used to have a great synth when i used to use cubase.
It had cinematic soft synths with names like "highlander" etc to suggest the kind of film theme each sound was.Think it was a just-cubase plugin as when I moved to AbletonLive I lost the plugin - Live wouldnt "see" it.

There is an article in this months Sound on Sound on how to get PC plugins to work on a Mac.
