"Squirt", your children.

Over the weekend I was attending a Gala with some industry colleagues and affiliates. Some people brought their families along as it was a big event. An affiliate of mine, let's call him Theodore for now, had two of his children there, being attended to by his wife.
A couple of times during conversations his kids would run up to him and say something. Each time he'd address them as "Squirt". Such as, "Hey Squirt" or "Go grab Mommy, squirt!"
I find this to be disgusting. I just sort of casually mentioned the fact that your children all start out as a "squirt", so it's actually quite reprehensible to refer to them as that. Why make continuous inappropriate allusions like that in public, especially at your children's expense? Theodore said I'm completely clueless as I don't have children and simply "don't understand" - yet I strongly disagree. I would never call my children "squirt", the same way I wouldn't call them "seaman", or anything else along those lines.

I think it depends on how you are seeing the word squirt. Since you referenced the word "seaman" I'd assume you are seeing it as a sexual reference.
