Note that if you get RFP's from firms, make sure they know the citrix data integration objectives clearly, otherwise you may get random guesses that benefit nobody.

Thanks for all your help, I will pass all this on.

Ask if they need the website to communicate with corporate data info in realtime, or if it's a stand-alone, brochure-like website, or if it can be updated once a week or so?

I would check with Sitecore (~$50k) and Kentico5 (~$7-25k+) and see if they are compatible. If not, they will likely be able to point you in a good direction.

I think the question I would be interested in is "what are they actually using Citrix to do right now and in the future?"

dmullins may be right.... I'm not a consultant kind of person anymore, having been burned out...
if you're a designer who can find a non-burned-out former IT developer/consultant, this could be very lucrative.

Intranet vs public website may require IT dept to redo a lot of router stuff to host a public website that won't allow anyone to hack into their private network.... and that they'll probably make a huge fuss over, after saying it's easy in a meeting but taking 6 weeks to do it... maybe not, but that was my experience...
which is why hosting externally, where the infrastructure already exists is a huge way to dodge needless complication...
- 6 months, not 6 weeks... 6 weeks was what VP of marketing demanded, 6 months was IT's response.vaxorcist

Compatible in what way?
Citrix provides a remote desktop afaik .. do they want to embed a remote desktop view into the site?

I don't see any problem with the IT department wanting things to be compatible for their CRM/RO's/etc. tools. The problem is they need to be the ones that make the recommendation for which CMS to use. Otherwise, you could end up making a critically-bad choice in the end due to a possible lack of knowledge of the bigger picture on how things work on their end.
- true..... just make sure marketing knows this will be more involved than they thinkvaxorcist

personally, I'd tell them to fuck themselves and run it externally, on a standard platform using a CMS that's commonly used by designers.
You could possibly use dotNetNuke or Ektron, both winblows CMS's, but I'd run like the wind from the IT dept....
- That's a really good way to lose business. This seems to me that they are a decent-sized company.dMullins
- Personally, I wouldn't turn down a big project because they don't wanna use my shitty WP or EE CMS.dMullins
- It surprises me sometimes how very little most designers know about C-class website architecture.dMullins
- The final site should be more than just informational. What if they want the website to tie into their MS Great Plains acct? Sharepoint? Etc.dMullins
- Sharepoint? Etc?dMullins
- Not talking down to anyone in particular, just trying to raise some points.dMullins
- you're right in a way... no insult taken... I got burned out by a string of huge projectsvaxorcist
- marketing dept wanted 6 week deadlines, IT dept wouldn't start till 6 months of meetings...vaxorcist
- lots of people got burned in the middle due to management not allowing cross-communicationvaxorcist
- Sounds exactly like every C-class project I've ever been on. Too many cooks in the kitchen trying to tell the real chefs what to do.dMullins
- to do.dMullins
- but if you like the heat in the kitchen, there's $$$ to be made, see accenture,etc...vaxorcist

You're right about the IT dept thing, it's the IT mob who are insisting on the compatibility. They use it for their intranet - can it not be made to work for an extranet as well? Or should she tell them to go fuck themselves?
- vaxorcist0
Hmm....
Citrix is an IT dept thing, possibly unrelated to anything website/CMS-like, and/or possibly a total stranglehold that means you have to buy some massively consulta-saurus expensive middleware CMS....
Need much more info to get any real idea...
