I just got asked by an old co-worker if I could provide HTML and CSS for a news site consisting of 30 templates of which more than half are custom layouts, not shared by any others.
His deadine? One week from today.

Ask him if you can borrow his wife and sister for the weekend.
- i've met his wife. Not an option.zenmasterfoo

if you actually finish this in one week, then you fail.

Charge out of the wazoo, get an ok and go at it.
Or get a no, but on the upside you'll have no more silly requests.
- lukus_W20
Say no. Tell him he needs to be more realistic.
- capn_ron0
that's easy to say no to. it is impossible. and if you do complete it the next request will be even more insane.
just say no.

I declined work on the project. The home page alone would have been a week of code and QA. The site is massive. Sanity levels are returning to normal.
I hate turning down the cash, but there's no human way I can mange that.

4 a day, at 4 hours a piece, 16 hour days
16 x 7 = 112 hours
$100 an hour, $11,200I might be willing to work a crazy week for $11k
- no way. for a project at this size, I'd charge double rate with a rush fee upfront.zenmasterfoo
- 20k at least.zenmasterfoo
- this post reminds me of: http://2.bp.blogspot…moldero

Uhm...
Why you all be thinking this needs to be a one man job?
Don't you have a few guys in your circles who you could all throw stuff at?
^ $11,200 / 2 or even 3 = still good extra income. For everyone involved.

but really , I mean how is this a lot of work , you are creating custom templates right, not Custom websites , one is green one is blue find 30 other colors and presto you have 30 templates off one design

This might be humanly possible if you were a speed freak and knew that they weren't going to um and ah about things, delay sending you copy and all the other things that clients with no understanding of what we do/need seem to love doing.
The fact that he asked this is clear indication that he is one of said clients

It could potentially be a fake deadline.
- nope not fake. I imagine they ran over the backend dev cycle by a lot.zenmasterfoo

@Battleaxe - This isn't a Wordpress blog. It's templates for a news site. That has nothing to do with what color it is. Think about msnbc and then think about coding it out completely in a week. That incudes the home page, section fronts, article pages, blogs, commenting for said blogs, galleries, specialty pages, etc. Now multiply all of that (I left out some) by a factor of three or four. The multiple variations are based on presentation. Large stories sometimes need to look differently when they show up.
Now take into consideration the designer who did the work (not me) didn't grid his/her designs out. That's not entirely bad, but for a news site, scalability is a big thing. Especially if you want to make content modular. So coding just got a little bit more complicated. QA in various browsers and whatnot.
- Sounds like he won't find anyone then, or will end up with shitpinkfloyd
- I stand corrected, good day sir
*tips hat and runs out of hereBattleAxe - Ask, then grid that shit into niceness?Peter
- Just punch him in the facepinkfloyd
- I know enough about this guy already that they're over budget and out of time.zenmasterfoo

i bet if you had taken it mid week you would have gotten a call to make sure all pages were ipad compatible... ;)
a lot of newspapers/sites are struggling with that they don't have the overhead to do 33%more design work to acommodate the vertical horizontal twist of the user.
- abettertomorrow0
I could have done it. Just sayin'.
