how long should it take to setup a domain name?
I purchased a domain name form 1&1 yesterday and i still cannot edit the name server. they told me it should take 24 to 72 hrs but it never takes that long when i register with other companies.. any thoughts?

24 - 72 hours normally.

you have to keep going to the IP address or url. the more requests they get, the quicker it turns over.

if i go to the web page it works* it get the default page...
when i go to the back end to change the nameserver it says (Unmodifiable)
but when i call thkey are telling me that it is still processing..with other companies like godaddy it normally takes a couple of hours.. what gives?

Godaddy will set up your domain faster, but you'll also get 1000% more mail from them in a year - mostly snake oil renewal notices for things that you didn't order or are free.
Give 1&1 48 hours. It's worth it.

I heard the 1&1's CAll center is located in the philipines, maybe they are screwing with me.

I happened to have the misfortune of dealing with 1and1′s call center support. I will tell you there is no question as to its absolutely useless nature.

1and1 is really sucks......I’m ready to sue the company...

Even if you modify ya thing, sometimes, if google indexes it, it would take about 24-72 for DNS to completely cycle through in other servers.
- On top of 24-72 hr for modifying.JSK

- <this... i find DNS propagation is more like 12 hours these days. it's always a few hours more for the client.kingsteven

Had more luck and 'joy' with 1and1 than with any of the alternatives. Fair enough their support is rubbish but their systems have always (mostly) been good for me so I haven't needed them much.
- I used to think the same, but once you realise what the alternatives are, there isn't any going back.lukus_W2

quick dumb question... I have my domains on 1&1. also with a hosting plan. If I drop the hosting plan will my client still be able to check their email?
I could just go over there and look around but wondering if anyone knows here
- you should, check the package and see if your domain comes with emailbrodster
