I work a lot with symbols. Whenever I pull a symbol/graphic onto the artboard, illustrator places this symbol/graphic on a "new layer." This makes me spend more time making sure all of my objects are on the same layer rather than, just continuing to work as I've always done in previous versions of illy.
I've searched and cannot find out how to turn this "feature" off.
What say you? Any help would be appreciated.

maybe...
1. Unlink the symbol
2. Use Pathfinder>Exclude (this one should work for all kinds of forms)
3. Make a compound pathResult: layer is gone?

Curios about this too.
Along with the annoying "ARTBOARD" being added to the file name every time you export something now. Extremely annoying.
- by the way, you could just group them all and flatten the layers.formula
- never experienced this...loving cs5doesnotexist
- I can group them and flatten, but its such a pain in the ass. just want to turn the feature offrodzilla
- yeah sorry i don't get "ARTBOARD" on exports... just an 01, 02, 03... in ref to each board.horton

@DNE - try it. type something on the artboard or make a square. Then pull out a symbol/graphic. Watch your layers closely. Its on the "same" layer, but below. Its just a pain in the ass. Illy never did this before.

^ I made 2 shapes, then drew some symbols...
it put the symbols all as a group above the 2 shapes
yours is placing it below everything? on the bottom of the current layer?
- indeed. it does this for all 14 designers currently working.rodzilla

try dumping your preferences?
- seems like a womft, if what's happening to me is happening to all other designers in my team.rodzilla
- true...doesnotexist

try dumping illustrator?
Shit gets worse every year

sounds like a preference somewhere.
- yes it does, but cannot find it.
it shouldn't make "sublayers" within layers. how is that helpful?rodzilla - look up the 'Draw Behind' function and change it and see if that stops creating a new layer... just a guessDodecahedron
- doesn't work. still creates "sublayers."rodzilla
- yes it does, but cannot find it.

the multiple artboards thing is cool, but how about some damn folders for layers like pshop????
- horton0
new symbol should not create a new layer.
it creates a named sublayer or object in layers menu, no diff than <Path> etc.
- genfour0
use the sprayer tool instead.. and create a symbol set
- ESKEMA0
Doesn't happen here. It places the symbol on the top most spot in the currently active layer. You (your office) must have something weird defined...
