You must be working with a standard formated drive not HFS+, which supports 255 characters. http://support.apple.com/kb/TA20…

Throw us a bone here, where are these files being edited? Internal drive, External drive, Network share?
OS9 had a 31 character limit, and a little googling looks like AFP (the old networking protocol of OS9) might have that limitation too.
Another possibility is the drive was formatted as HFS instead of HFS+

Well it appears it is only Word documents that are causing the problem. She can create a new folder or document and have a long filename, but if existing documents are opened from our server and saved locally they get truncated.
If I 'Get info' on her HD, the format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled), which is the same as mine and I have no problems.

Why do you need such long file names?

connect to share drive with smb instead of afp and the character limit wont be an issue.

Apparently earlier versions of Office X (Might just be X, all the message board posts are from 2003/4) were programmed by fucking morons and retained the OS9 31 character limit.
Upgrade her word perhaps.

well, at least she doesn't neet apostrophes in her filenames... I once worked with a guy who demanded to use filenames like
O'Hare Project.xls
and he couldn't believe I couldn't make that happen....

Ahhh... yes. I thought it might be Word specific. She is rocking Office X which is indeed very old. I shall beg our IT monkey for an upgrade on her machine.
Microsoft eh? What a bunch of fucking morons.
Cheers for that peeps.
