I've a small nonsense movie to make for a mates birthday party, but all the clips his GF want in it are on you-tube. Is it possible to extract them at all?

I've found DownloadHelper to be the best, direct downloads from YouTube and other services + you can chose which quality video you want to grab.

1. In Safari open up a YouTube video. Once it starts playing, in Safari's application bar click on Window > Activity. This shows you what resources the page is accessing.
2. At this point you used to be able to just find the biggest resource file and that would be the video. But now YouTube buffers in separated chunks. No matter. Find a series of very long URLs in a row that begin in a similar fashion to this: http://r10.lhr14s13.c.youtube.co…... You'll notice a new one appears every few seconds. That's YouTube downloading in separate chunks.
3. Single click on one of these long URLs and hit Command+C. Then paste that (Command+V) into Safari's address bar. At the end of this long URL you will see parameters for "begin" and "len" (short for "length"). Just delete those parameters from the URL and hit enter. You'll notice you are now downloading the full video as an FLV file. Congratulations.
Hmm... Maybe I'll post this on Stewdio later. Seems like useful info.

Since you're just downloading the video you're currently watching: to change the quality of the video select the higher resolution before watching it in YouTube.

btw, my above directions for Safari also apply to Chrome and FireFox with only slight modification. I think it's cool that these other scripts and plugins exist but there's something fascinating to me about doing it "manually" through the browser's existing infrastructure. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea.
- yep, takes a while for all the plugin autors to update after youtube shake things up. so it's worth knowing...kingsteven

or if you're on a mac : menu bar > window/activity > double clic on the whatever.flv > normally it's the biggest file (20MB +)

Seems like YouTube has done a little update again. (See my original instructions above.) Nothing too serious: instead of "begin" and "len" parameters in the URL these seem to have been replaced by "range." So just delete the "range" parameter and associated value and you're good to go again. (But let me know if you run into oddities.) Give it a shot yourself with this brain-melting bass:
The comments on that video are golden, btw.
