Well, I feel like any bigger city will be considered "hipsterville" by somebody. I just see Seattle as an amazingly beautiful city. I really wish we didn't have to leave, but alas, we do. Maine was on the radar anyway, just not this soon. It, too, is pretty beautiful.
Here's a picture of the house we almost purchased:
- WOW! Why didn't you pull the trigger? Looks amazing.Andrew_D
- We did, and were about to get it, but then some guy came out of the woodwork...autonoma
- That had left the owner a note before we came along, and he offered cash. Broke our hearts.autonoma
- It's much better than it looks in the photo.autonoma
- Gutted for you, Maine. ;-) Oh and fuck that guy with the bag of money. Hope you find something better or equal.Andrew_D

Why don't you just get a realtor in the area and have them help you? Going to be difficult to do 3000 miles away. I moved back to Boston from Seattle in January. :)

- Can't believe how cheap some of the houses are on that site, big homes for $175,000 that are actually quite nice.Andrew_D

Our goal wasn't to buy yet, and still isn't. We just fell in love with that house. We actually viewed it to rent it, then this guy put and offer on it and we countered. His offer was cash.

i know you mentioned google, but what sort of searches have you done? i just searched for "real estate brokers maine" and got a bunch of results.. this is most likely your best choice over craigslist which is as you described it.. i recommend a broker to do the search for you.. and plus its their area of knowledge.. best of luck in your search and hopefully you can find something suitable for all your needs..

That's very cute!
Yeah, Maine has incredible deals on good homes if you're looking to buy. The house I posted above was 3,000 square feet (including a fantastic 1 bedroom apartment that we would have leased) and sold for $255,000.
- MIND = BLOWN! That'll get you 600 square feet in Toronto, if you're lucky.Andrew_D

maine has good deals cause it's got fuck all going on. it's a beautiful place, but severely economically depressed. your only chance really is the internet up there...

Not a Maine resident (Portsmouth, NH) but Brunswick is nice. Might be a bit pricey because of Bowdoin College, but it's got a nice small town feel but has a lot of other things to offer (which you're going to want after Seattle, believe me). This one's kinda nice for $257K:
