I'm getting mixed signals from consultants who say they know better.

two different things?

SEO couldn't give a shot about UX. They're only concern is search engines and how a site gets rated by them, as the name implies.
- it always amazes me that companies like this exist.instrmntl

I have so much to learn.

Awesome UX + Poor SEO = no one can use the awesome UX
Poor UX + Aweseom SEO = no one can stand the poor UX
Poor UX + Poor SEO = no one cares.
- i rather have poor SEO than poor UX. besides, people will find it eventually********

we were hired to rewrite a website that had been SEO'd into an unreadable mess.... the copy was accidently hilarious....
we were told SEO was somewhat important, but it had to actually be a good experience one a HUMAN was on the website...

To learn SEO and be good at it ... 1 month
To learn UX and be good at it .... 1 Year +

I don't think these things have to work against each other. What are these people telling you that sounds strange?

bad SEO = sometimes bad UX
thoughtful SEO = less impact on UX
Note also that much of true SEO is actually not related to a website's actual design at all....

SEOUX!

UX is a scientific discipline, SEO is guessing.
- However, UX can be guessing if the proper project cycle isn't taken into consideration.studderine
- User research is often ignored, still.studderine

UX is an umbrella term describing disciplines which focus around the psychology and design of user-interfaces and interactions.
SEO is an umbrella term, describing techniques which help a site to gain a more favourable ranking in search engine listings.
They are two completely different things.
- .. I don't reckon they'd necessarily ever be in competition with each other.lukus_W2

WTF is this 2009?
I drink in the oldest old man bar in the most backward city on earth, tonight they were talking about SEO... IGNORED
A couple of years back, I got asked to 'do SEO' for an investment banker. he wanted a photo of himself with a certain (subsequently disgraced) golfer to come up when you put his name in google. He didn't even have a website... REJECTED
Last week I met with a prospective client who spent £6000 a month on SEO with "some Indian company" so wanted us to go in on a profit share (on a decent product)... because she had spent her entire budget before she had anything to sell... FUCKED
- £6000 a month... somebody in India is living like a Maharaja!vaxorcist

Decent SEO doesn't need to fuck up or conflict with the site experience. Ultimately its more about strategy than getting the exact right words on the page. But its far from guesswork or bullshit.

technically, SEO lives inside of the larger umbrella that is UX
- I guess SEO gets them to the front-door .. UX deals with how they get around (and what they do within) the house.lukus_W2

HCI and Instructional Design, look into it.

Note that SEO will often get them in the side door...
i.e. SEO often works best on sub-pages, not homepages, so people wil come to sub-pages from google... check your analytics.

If SEO was so important, why isn't it the main focus of the top websites out there?
- vaxorcist0
Sometimes naturally popular, really great websites need less SEO than not-so-great ones full of PR that nobody wants to read anyway...
SEO is sometimes like artificial sex appeal....
i.e. Some websites that need lot of SEO have not that much natural appeal, so they need plastic surgery and pickup artist lessons...
- I think SEO is used to reduce risk. If you're depending on a constant revenue stream, you need to reduce it.lukus_W2

Those big sites are benefiting from SEO. If you search for "Apple computer," what comes up (beside Apple)? Probably Amazon and Wikipedia and other popular sites. Combination of high page rank, content relevancy and most important millions of people linking to them because of their existing popularity.
Now imagine some mom and pop store that sells Apple computer parts. They don't have the links, page rank or the brand name. They will probably never rank for "Apple computer" so maybe they target more long tail keywords like "Apple 27" Cinema Display." Their SEO person might suggest titling their product pages to match the terms they want to rank for, or use link building to build the popularity.

Some sites act as huge silos - capturing an audience purely to generate advertising revenue. AOL basically works along these lines, owning a portfolio of publications designed to gain maximum attention. In this case, SEO methodology has been written into the processes and procedures of the company.
A PDF presentation detailing AOLs plans was leaked recently .. it makes for quite interesting reading. http://www.businessinsider.com/t…
